The Art of the Advantage by Kaihan Krippendorff details and focuses on what are known as the “36 Stratagems”. The “36 Stratagems” are a 2,500 year old strategic guide to winning in warfare created during the warring-states period in China.
The author does a great job at drawing parallel lines between using these strategies to win wars and to win in business. He executes this flawlessy it seems by giving tremendous examples of these strategies having been used in real life documented battles of war as well as real battles and manouvres between two or more competitors in business. Two companies he uses as examples in describing how these strategies have been executed are Pepsi and Coca Cola.
Anyone who sets off to read The Art of the Advantage should prepare to enjoy it immensely. I believe this book is not only a great book to read but it may in fact be vital for every business owner to read. You may not want to practise these same strategies to get ahead yourself but you may want to know these strategies to be aware of others perhaps trying to execute them on you. It is much better to know what your enemy is up to rather than knowing what you are not willing to do! And for all of you who are more than willing to attack a competitor not just being on the defensive but as the antagonist – need I write anymore? Yikes….
